Malarky... re: ND6 NOT Backwards compatable!! ~Naomi Deskroterakol 22.Jul.03 03:50 PM a Web browser Notes Client 6.0.2 CF1All Platforms
This is a weird bunch of responses on this thread. Lots of misinformation.
A) Design compatibility has nothing whatsoever to do with ODS. ODS stands for "ON DISK STRUCTURE." The design is no more dependent on the ODS than your Excel spreadsheet is dependent on whether the file is stored on a SCSI or IDE harddrive.
B) I use Designer 6 to change applications on an R5 server EVERY DAY. I have for months. I was doing this even when ND6 was in beta. Never once have I had a problem that wasn't caused by the use of ND6 features/code which was then executed in R5.
C) Using a forward version of Designer to support an app run in a previous version has always been a risk. If you write, compile and test your code on Windows 2003, no one is surprised when it doesn't run on Win 2K. What makes Notes any different?
D) Although IBM is shooting admins & developers in the foot with their new single installation requirements manifesting in 6.5, it's not exactly overwhelmingly difficult to copy program files and configure a PC to run multiple versions. Any computer professional should be capable of installing both, and any knowledgable computer professional should be able to find and follow the instructions for getting multiple versions to run simultaneously.
Ben's question stands: when and where did IBM ever say that Designer 6 would have the type of "backwards compatibility" described in the original post?
